Chapter Eight - Self-Regarding Decisions

My mother was an accountant by profession, a brilliant one for that matter and one could easily foretell the latter without hardship. Henceforth, even when she was still in college, her grades were always delightful but I dare say that accounting was not the only thing my mother was fond of, for she was also in love with poetry and she dearly loved reading poems. Therefore, from time to time she would attend poetry sessions, and both my father and I would urge her to share her poems as well during poetry sessions that were often held in Ivy Park, a beautiful suburb in Polokwane but she was always hesitant. However, one could not blame her for not rising to that occasion, Ivy Park poetry events consisted of well articulated poets and I am not saying they were above my mother’s pay grade but one had to be readily sure before taking part, yet those poetry sessions were just for pleasure.

Initially, my parents would often attend poetry events together but as of late, my father was not keen to spend too much time with his wife, my mother, and that really hurt me because his reason for dismissing his wife was nothing but a disfigured sense of rage. Another poetry session was at hand and my mother cheerfully asked me to accompany her since my father was reluctant, I agreed. Sadly, I did not like poetry, even in high school, it always suspended a cloud of indecision upon my head, but I loved reading novels because I could easily understand them. Nonetheless, my mother needed me and I was prepared to go the whole nine yards for her. We attended the session and it was amazing but that was until we stumbled upon my mother’s former friend, Chloe Rush, I had never seen her in person, I only knew her from my mother’s photos.

When we saw her, my mother’s mood changed as quick as a wink and I had never seen her in that state before, it worried me. I held my mother’s hand and made an attempt to get away since the session was already over but Chloe Rush caught sight of us and approached us at once.

“Natasha! Hi, how are you?” Chloe Rush greeted my mother with bated breath, yet my mother was neither delighted nor keen to see her former friend. I do not know what really happened between them and I never had the desire to ask my mother. Nevertheless, I do know that Ms. Rush was my mother’s best friend and that they had been friends since primary school.

“Let’s leave Nathan!” My mother said those words fiercely while pulling me vigorously, for she really was tortured by the sight of Chloe Rush. At once we made away to the parking lot but Ms. Chloe did not give up, she chased after us with resilience and at seeing that, my mother succumbed. “What do you want Chloe!”

“I want to expressly talk to you, you do not have to say anything, just lend me your ears, please Natasha.” Chloe begged for my mother’s attention and from her facial expression and that of my mother, I could tell that something tremendous had happened between the two and I felt like they needed some privacy so I tried to give them some space but my mother wouldn’t let go of me.

“Okay, go ahead Chloe!” My mother was not an impolite person, let alone being hostile but in this case, things were different.

“I am sorry Natasha, what I did was beyond redemption, my actions were conniving and I honestly apologize for my deeds.” Chloe Rush meaningfully apologized to my mother and I had never met her before the moment at hand but I think those words were sincere. However, I was not prepared to take sides.

My mother looked at me after hearing those words and at once she wept. Chloe tried to hug her but my mother stopped her. “What you did to me was indeed conniving, and if I could, I would resent you for it but I am unable to resent you or anyone else for that matter. Your self-regarding decisions nearly jeopardized my career but if you must know, I have forgiven you, I just don’t want to be friends with you, just so you could once again lead me down the garden path. Chloe Rush, you are forgiven but please, do not ever attempt to talk to me again. Get in the car Nathan.”

I had never seen that sight of my mother before and I was saddened to see her weep. Whatever Chloe Rush had done to her, was truly hurtful.
